I do figure that in a few more days it probably would not pump up at all and all that pumping could cause the compressor to fail, adding another 3-500.00 to the repair bill. I was right on top of it and by the time that message showed up, the appointment to fix it was the next day. On only the drivers side, which was the first to go, I heard a pssssst when I hit the speed bumps where I live, and took it to the shop immediately, and they diagnosed it and ordered the strut. Hope that helps. It is one of the repairs that just sucks you in, no alternatives, and I only use MB parts on the car. Local shop warranties work and parts for 2 years on MB parts in their repairs.
There are alternatives...such as swapping out the airmatic for coilovers. Getting mine done as I type. Also had my brakes/rotors changed. Those are Adam's Rotors.

Completed the Airmatic-to-KW Variant 2 Coilovers conversion. Ride is nice!! It's a little lower than what I had hoped, but it's fine. Just worried that it's going to be too far out of alignment to do anything simple.

Not a darn thing aside from oil changes (myself). She has been absolutely flawless for the last 65k miles. Thank God. I changed my valve cover gaskets myself about a month ago. Now its just a matter of keeping everything clean.

How big of a job was the valve cover gaskets? I suppose that's those jobs that labor cost is hundreds times the parts' cost.

To be honest, it was a lot easier than I thought. I went very slow though, did not want to mess anything up. Everything is so expensive in there. I was glad There are a lot of small things I learned though that were not in the forums. I was VERY careful not to get any dirt or foreign debris in the valves. I am glad I replaced them when I did, they were not brittle so I did not lose any parts inside the engine (my X5's had gotten brittle and was a pain ensuring no parts got left behind). If you plan I doing yours I will write up some pointers I found helpful.
I believe I spend less than $60 on parts and used original Mercedes gaskets. It was easy and cheap enough that I will not wait as long as I did this time. The first minute trace of oil, I'm changing it right away.

Thank you for the reply! I presume you change the gasket due the trace of oil .... The last time I needed to get it done was because the engine idle was rough, and they couldn't fix it with a tune-up. It was a different car many years ago. I'd never done it myself.

I am going to replace my lower, rear control arms in the next few weeks. Do you have any tips on that job? I just replaced the sway bar end links, and found that the lower connection to the tie rod like joint has a lot of slop on the control arm. Maybe that is my clunk. Bob

Happy Memorial Day Weekend To One & All!

I just bought this car about a week ago. It's been driving great and everything works.

Last night I parked it out on the patio and the right front tire was down in a small indentation (2-3") now the front suspension is sagging. The passenger side a little worse than the driver's side. The car doesn't have the adjustable suspension option. Will it correct itself? Had the car thoroughly inspected and everything was good. Have ltd warranty from seller.

Thanks much for any help.

ps: there are no fluids dripping, no funky noises, etc. It worked perfectly yesterday, came out today and it was squatting and when i drove it hobby - horsed up and down.

Same to you. We always forget what this day is for.

Did the 'E' klass wagons have air suspension back then?
If so, it may need new shocks IMHO. I hope not, cause they are expensive!

Good luck.

Reagrds,

DHG

I only did it to maintain a clean engine. It had been leaking for a few months and I was getting real tiered of cleaning oil off the coils and cover every month. I wipe down the engine and engine bay every time I wash my car, or about once a week . I also replaced the breather tubes on the left side cover because I tore them when trying to pry off. They were a little brittle anyway. Cheap parts and easy to replace.

I cover it nearly every day while at work also. They call me crazy, but when my car looks as good as it does for her age, I have the last laugh.

Gersh - I don't think folks realize how much cooler the car stays when covered. And it can't take more than a minute to put it on and take it off. Like you said, the real payoff for the 2 minutes a day investment is nice car for a longer time.

I did this today!

MB Dealers charge me $39.95 for each bolts. That's $159.80 just for 4 bolts. WTH?

I aslo have to add 2 extra plastic washer shimmer to the bottom of the Eibach Springs, and that cost me $9.95 a piece and it take 2 piece to make 1 washer. A total of 4 piece on each side of the strut. Come out a total to: $79.60+Uncle Sam = too damn expensive!
But it will help raise your height up to about 0.90" for a better camber & alignment. Because I'm at -2.73 degree in front and -1.2 degree on rear.

((( Eibach front springs is too LOW! ))) I would NOT recommend Eibach springs. Save yourself some money and go with the KW V1 coil/strut.

I strip both of the strut bolts! Lucky these bolts aren't very expensive at your local MB Dealer.

At 120,000 I thought my starter drive might be failing and pulled belly pan to look at it. Then found exhaust had to be pulled to remove right side engine mount which has to be removed to pull the starter. Then I decided naw,, it could not be a failing starter put it all back together.

Now one trivia question. MB dealer has a sign Labor charge $125/hr.

But my aircraft repair shop only charges $75/hr to work and CERTIFY my aircraft for flight?

So tell me again why MB is so expensive on labor when my aircraft mechanic has way more responsiblity and very high technical skills?

Oh forgot no fancy building just hanger and no carpet to raise overhead $50/hr.

Nice! When I begin taking my car to school I might do the same. Keeps the car cooler and UV off the paint and dash - hopefully saves the life of the car a bit especially with little atmosphere and intense sun in Colorado summers. Hot and dry much like SoCal.
