Just submitted my complaint with the NHTSA. Hopefully they do something about this. Don't like filling my tank 3/4 each time and wondering if a large leak could occur and cause an explosion in my garage near the water furnace.

I think we're pissin' in the wind expecting NHTSA to compel MB to correct our gas tank leaks. This has been going on for years ... MB is staking out the high ground of calling this a "normal wear and tear problem." MB isn't going to pay to correct our gas tank problems. I'll keep checking this link from time to time, but I don't expect anything helpful to result.

I totally agree. MB will never do anything and claim if you changed the fuel filter element early would not have an issue.

Complaints solve nothing here waiting for the government to take action. I made a different choice and replaced the car with another brand. My $$ speaks even if MB doesn't listen.

I have an 06 E320 CDI that leak as discribed here if I fill all the way - so I'm thinking the CDI should be included. I'm still working my way through this thread but hope something is getting resolved with this problem.

2005 E55 with 55k miles on it. ODI 10551386 filed. I just got a $3k repair bill for the whole dang assembly. Apparently I need a sender AND a new fuel tank.

Just came out the other day into the garage and was nearly bowled over from the vapor concentration! Holy cow. And it's right next to a gas water heater with an always-on-pilot light!!

Needless to say it's being parked outside at the moment.

Have dealer check VMI to see if VIN is covered by recall 2008020001.

Some MBs & Bimmers
HI there, am I correct to assume that this Fuel Sender Leak has been addressed by this Recall Note posted in the previous post?

Interesting note is that the recall is dated 2008 and I have not seen any letter from MBUSA regarding bringing my 2003 E500 to address this issue.

My leak problem showed up just last month and I thought my wife overfilled the gas tank

Mercedes Benz Defective Fuel Sensors and Fueltanks

Everyday I run into more people with this problem the dealers and Mercedes Benz Corporate are a$$holes about it .If you are lucky they may cover half of the parts and charge you the labor to repair/replace the leaking sensors. Just hope that your gas tank does not need to be replaced. They are getting hundreds of calls a day on these Leaking tanks and sensors. This will end bad for Mercedes One day in the near future someone's house is going to burn to the ground because of leaking Fuel in the garage next to the water heater.

My wife had the problem in her CLK550 2007 The dealer Fletcher Jones of Newport Beach Gave us nothing but trouble and getting the problem fixed her car has 7000 miles on it.

Shame on Mercedes Benz of America and Fletcher Jones Motorcars of Newport Beach. CA
For NOT doing the right thing for their Customers. This is a Serious fire and explosion Hazard. The fix can run 1300 dollars all the way up to 3500 dollars if you need a new fuel tank. The estimates online say that as many as a million vehicles are using these defective Sensors (I think it is a lot more)

Below see the pics of the actual leaking sensors. Keep in mind these sensors are located directly under the rear passenger seats under a access panels. In my wife vehicle we actual smelled the gasoline in the cabin and the garage. Also note all of the leads and electrical lines going into this sensors in contact with the raw fuel/gasoline.

Bad Customer service.= Mercedes Benz

When you add this issue,, to SBC brakes and the complete failure on the airmatic system you can see why I no longer drive MB. It will end up poorly for MB for having these issues.

Leaking fuel sensors on Mercedes Vehicles...

Defective products are not just inconvenient for consumers. When products fail due to bad designs or manufacturing flaws, they can cause injuries and cost consumers significant financial loss. Manufacturers have a responsibility to comply with industry safety standards and " to WARN consumers" of any potential dangers. If physical injury or financial harm results from their failure to do so, and when other consumers have suffered losses similar to yours, the manufacturers may be held legally responsible through class action lawsuits and complex multi-district ligation (MDL).

^ Nah they're just waiting for something serious to happen before they take action retroactively, as government generally does. I say we set someone's car from the forum on fire so we can finally get their attention.

^ While I applaud the effort of that law suit, I'm sure my $25 dollar reparation from a class action suit wouldn't really cover the expense of replacing the unit.

Welcome to MBWolrd, but the rest of us have been suffering with this for at least 2 -3 years now.

I think we all understand that due to amount of vehicles affected (and the associated costs to repair it correctly) the costs will run into the hundreds of millions of dollars. By comparison, paying a team of expensive lawyers to delay and deny these claims is an absolute bargain..... It's not about "doing what's right" it's all about the dollars and cents. Mercedes-Benz has already run the numbers and knows this will be the best overall outcome..... Even with some negative publicity along the way.

Unfortunately what you say sounds like what is happening. But then consider today in the news top 5 cars for $40,000 did not include MB. Infinity, Lexus,Caddy, Audi and one other but no MB. I think the MB trade mark is being tarnished with these quality issues. Perhaps truck sales and stripped down models are carrying the brand in other countries.

The millions of dollars that MB-USA saves by denying this repair will pay for LOTS of marketing and advertising to promote their "brand".....

For every MB loyalist that they lose for this type of issue, they will seduce someone else to become a "new" customer in the future. It's the unfortunate reality of the situation.

For those people out there who are being screwed over on this, file your claim on the NHTSA website (as I have been preaching for the last 2 years) so that the number of cases becomes too large to ignore. The only way MB-USA will ever deal with this is if they are FORCED to by a government agency like NHTSA.... it will not be voluntary.

In the meantime, if the smell bothers you. Get the fuel sender/fuel filter and seals replaced with the latest parts, and then flood the top of the senders with a fuel-resistant epoxy to help strengthen the lousy material that is cracking and allowing fuel to escape. It appears to be a viable solution and a few guys have done it successfully and seem to have permanently solved the fuel leak/smell issues.

Ultimately, the costs are coming out of your own pocket (or your warranty company, if you're that fortunate).... make peace with it and move on.
