heck, i had to update my 2016 w212 (build 2016-03-11).. my indie's scanner said I had the 9_15 version but vladimir said my car wasn't upgraded, and indeed, it did not work, til I took it to the dealer and paid them to upgrade it, THEN it worked, and it works great!.
Hi there, I will try to flash my old NTG 5 2014 Unit this or next week, also for CLS, i have made carplay working but using 2018 X166 Head unit and Face plate from W218 (hybrid ) in general you need flash your Head Unit or change it to 2016+ and add USB socket that supports Mirroring. And thahts it

ummmmmmm. So, you have a 2016 car with the NTG 5 COMAND unit, and the dealer installed the latest software?
so what didn't work out? You don't need the engineering menu for anything.
Do you have Vladimir's CarPlay/AndroidAuto activator ? you shut the system off, plug that activator into your ODBC port, turn the system on, and it should go through a series of screens installing the CP/AA 'feature', the COMAND restarts a few times, when its done, remove the dongle, and plug a Iphone or android phone into USB 2, and follow my sequence here to enable it... https://pierce.smugmug.com/Misc/Hu5s1-Android-Auto/
basically, with COMAND turned on, you need to tap the TEL button, then with the knob, tap it up, then select TEL/(globe), rotate the knob to either CarPlay or Android Auto, tap the knob to select that, and then plug your phone in to USB 2, and it should come up in AA or CarPlay accordingly, and then your phone 'takes over' the NAV, MEDIA, and TEL modes, and is controlled with the knob. once this is selected, next time you get in the car, just plug your phone in to USB 2, and voila, there you are.

Mine is 2015 April and yes with NTG 5 COMAND unit. At mercedes, making a more recent update and for me everything is the same ... I only paid an hour to update ... but the update took 3 or 4 hours ... I don't know what failed but I would like to know if you did any update to know if it is true as they say they did a real update or not .... I have no way of knowing if it was done or not, I just paid for an hour of updating ...

The 2016 NTG5, you need to get the latest firmware from Mercedes, and then you need an activator to turn on the feature codes which Mercedes won't do because they were not features on our model car, but they work. This enables car play / Android auto and there are other feature codes
My 2016 COMAND NTG 5s1 retrofit into my 2010 W207.

What 2016 parts was needed SO FAR to do this retrofit from NTG4 to 5s1:
1. Comand 5s1 big version with built in HD navi
2. Screen
3. Video cable to screen
4. Repinning of cables in sockets
5. LAN antenna
6. H/K Amp
7. Camera and cablekit
8. Screen frame
9. New joystick with 4 buttons
10. Pincode
11. Maps with activation code
I am experimenting alot with programming and activating of menues. I got the AMG logo to start it of. And alot else so far.
So ALL that works now but
only PROBLEMS so far:
Navigation dont get a speed signal. So maps stop moving when it loses satelites.
Media dont showup in cluster. All else show up and work. Radio,Navi.phone...
AMG dails, then middle big one dont work. Guess it is also speed signal issue.
Camera dont send video

My car is w212 facelift 2013. I have already retrofited ntg 4.0 to NTG 5.1 from GL 2016 head unit and HK Logic 7 Speakers.
This command head unit 5.1 was already activated Androi Auto& Carplay
Everything work fine except:
1. Media, music from SD card, USB not shown on the cluster. Radio, Bluetooth are OK
2. I changed several USB box, wire but I cant not start Carplay, the screen still show message as image below. ( The phone charge and Ipod function in both ports of usb worked OK)
So what's wrong with my car? ( software of headunit or the way making wire input signal to USB box?)

Carplay must be activated by Mercedes and added to Vedoc. And it must be corect USB box.

First of all, this NTG 5.1 head unit of GL 2016 that I bought sucessfully installed, activated & used Carplay in previous car ( same model with me, w212 2013)
When I took this head unit and installed on my car, I tested three other Usb box and Carplay not work, just a message on screen
Note that: when i plug Iphone into 2 ports of Usb:
phone charge OK, play music from iphone/usb storage OK, so I think it's not problem from Usb box
So Pin to usb got problem, or the Carplay need to be activated again whenever headunit was taken out to another car?

I did not need to change the USB ports on my 2016 E350 to enable carplay/androidauto, I just had to get the units flashware updated AND used a 3rd party 'activator' to turn the feature on (since a 2016 E did not ship with it). the USB port that has the picture of the phone is otherwise identical to the ones that don't have the phone ircon on USB2

My vehicle is equipped with option 531 Command APS NTG5 / NTG5.5 and I already have the Navi map already updated to V14 2020/2021. My vehicle release date was 10/28/2015 but it's a 2016 W166. I just picked up a MB C5 SD. Can I enable it through the C5 and where do I go to enable Apple CarPlay on the C5?

you need 1) ensure the 'flashware' (firmware) is the latest, *AND* 2) install an 'activator' from a 3rd party such as Vladimir on ebay. the activator won't work without the latest flashware. if you forward your VIN to vladimir he can tell you if you have the correct firmware, there's 3 separate modules that need to be flashed, on my late production MY 2016, only 1 was correct, the other two still needed updates.
the buzzword to get the dealer to update the flashware is to report you are having issues with reliable bluetooth connectivity, that sometimes it works, but sometimes it doesn't and there's no discernable pattern. Don't even mention CarPlay to Mercedes, they do not support that feature on this model year car. expect to pay up to an hours labor for the flashware upgrade.
