My honest review.

So I picked up a 2016 E400 last week, and here is my honest review.
Currently now own a w211 03 E320 RWD 200k miles and a just purchased w212 16 E400 4matic. 85k miles.
Im hosesty a little disappointed in the handling and road feel of the E400. The steering feels a little too light, and slightly numb compared to my 03. I like the car obviously because I bought it, but almost enjoy driving the 03 more. It feels more German in the handling and steering feel. The 16 feels more Lexus like. It doesn't handle as well, and feels a tad boring imho. Now there's no comparison to the power, but there again with the 7 speed, it feels artificial. The five speed feels more benz like. I don't know maybe im nuts. The 400 is in mint condition, perfect service history, almost feels brand new, but my 03........

Steering is not directly connected to the wheels, engines and trannys have gotten too smooth. Welcome to new cars.

Yeah its crazy. I was sold on the condition of the car, and the newness. Its ten years old, so alot newer than my 03 but im having second thoughts. It feels cadillac grandpa car like, or Japanese maybe. Yeah companies are taking the fun out of driving. Even my 04 A6 felt alot tighter and go kart like. Ughh

The E400 SACHS dampers are poor performer and dangerous if for me.
Get Bilstein B4 front and rear and you will be amazed how nice the improvements are.

Since 2019 I have been using the B4 front and B4 or B6 rear. B4 rear is good enough.

Yes, electric power steering feel for maximum final tire grip, is not easy to identify the grip edge....compared to oldie hydraulic steering.

You don't have to put up with numb steering. The electric rack is not responsible. These cars can drive on course with perfect precision.

You just need maintenance work to restore sharp handling.

Leave the expensive shocks alone as they are not responsible for bounciness - That is... :
  1. loose 4x stab links
  2. loose 2x control arms
  3. loose 2x lower ball joints
  4. hard 2x strut top bearings
  5. loose 1x wheel bearing driver side

Steering wheel in W212s feel lighter compared to other European cars I have driven . Once I get used to it , other cars with heavier steering wheel feels less friendly to me . It's like you eat light cheddar and your palate is used to it but one morning you "treat" yourself to a gorgonzola mold cheese . It feels too strong

I really enjoy how this electric rack in conjunction with laser sensor up in the SCM are able to hold true center as if an armored tank (regardless of lane assist function). Very precise, no chewing-gum steering...
