Interesting info although I caution about the usefulness of the build-in cams. We have the BMW drive recorder which is an app that allows to record the windshield cam data. Optical, sensor and processor is so inferior that I consider this barely usable. Key is resolution and sensitivity (to record license plates, even at night). Also to capture parking vandalism. Take the $200, add a bit more and get a proper 2 channel 4k Dashcam.

Yes, but if you read that article, it's going to be a lot more than $200, because you have to get all those extras.. unless you're already planning to get all those options anyway then it's just $200 bucks.

 

That is probably correct, but interestingly the DOG doesn't mention any package or other option requirements (normally it does). Requirements may be added in a later revision - we'll have to see!

 

For what it's worth, when I purchased my car back in Feb my salesman (who is extremely knowledgeable on the MBUX system -- he trained the dealer concierge) mentioned that the Dash Camera was a feature Mercedes plans to add on a future MBUX S/W update. Unfortunately, no mention of when that might be.

 

my GLE53 came with the dash cam built in and automatically begins recording when I turn on the car. my dealer gave me a 64GB usb c drive that i plug into center storage compartment

I suppose that is a question of expectations. Video quality looks so so to me. Maybe 1080p? The key is recording at night and at a fast frame rate so that license plates can be captured.
We have a Blackvue 4K 2 channel dash cam (DR900s) and even though it is 4k, the difference to the Thinkware U1000 is day/night.

Our BMW recorder (2020 model) looks like the Mercedes in quality and I think it's good enough to show the police who was right/wrong in case of an accident but no way to capture a hit and run scenario where the license plate matters

However, if the dash cam activates right away and records permanently instead of the short clips on the BMW, than this is a great benefit. Build-in is by far my preferred solution.

 

I think the only market that allowed original Mercedes dashcams for a few years now was Russia. No other markets, not even in Germany. Unless someone found the way to hack it...

After more research the price of $200 would either indicate that it’s integrated or an even newer budget cam. The new Cam from last year is still over $800.

Here’s an article....Well, while we can only speculate here at MBZMaster.com, it looks like the dashcam was in hiding due to some unexplained legal issues. While it’s perfectly legal to use a dash cam inside the vehicle in the United States, it actually carries a very little weight in the court of law. There are too many Speilbergs, Tarantinos and whole lot of small -time video producers who can easily alter your dash cam footage into something completely different than what really happened, and then go figure!

However at the same time, the video recording inside your car can be helpful if it aligns with all other aspects of the legal case! Sometimes the recording can be useful for some other needs than just the recording of an actual accident, but sometimes not. Make sure NOT to get a dash cam if, for example, you are going to cheat on your wife or maybe husband! Definitely that video recording is not going to help you at all!

So starting with some 2021 models, Mercedes will roll out the Dashcam as an optional equipment. For people who don’t know, Dashcam stands for: “Dashboard Camera”, which you can use to video record your driving, and what’s going on around you. Some initial models to include the Dashcam – (21U) option are 2021 Mercedes E-Class, A-Class, CLA-Class, GLA-Class and GLB-Class. Probably some other models will follow in 2022.

At the time of the writing of this article, we assume that in order to get this Dashcam, you would need the “Augmented Video” for Navigation – (U19) option as a requirement. Simply because Augmented Video already incorporates the front camera, and it would be crazy not to use it! Then the footage can be saved apparently either via an internal hard drive (HDD) or simply via an external USB stick.

What is Mercedes Augmented Video for Navigation?

Instead of using the simple map on the Navigation display like every other car, MBUX uses this feature to display the real road in front of you, by using the front dashcam camera. Then MBUX uses it’s Navigation animation overlay layer to display the guidance! How cool is that? We will discuss this feature in more detail, in our upcoming article.

Now the fun part begins here: In order to get “Augmented Video” you must get “Multimedia Package” – (DA5), which is part of it. And in order to get the Multimedia Package, you have to get the “Premium Package” – (DP1) for a reason that you need to have two 10.25″ display screens. Thank you Mercedes – for being so complicated!

 

I just confirmed that the Camera is available now to add to the GLE 53 option 21U. I’ll have a price soon.
