Just another BEV fire.

Not great advertising for BEV's...spontaneous combustion while parked. These fires don't happen often but if it was parked in your garage it might be lethal. A Porsche took out an entire boat full of vehicles.

2023 EQE 500 SUV electric and 2024 Jaguar F-PACE SVR 5.0L
So that's like what, two of them in the last year or so? And none of them was anywhere near Idaho. So you should be able to sleep OK at night with an EV in the garage.

Now about those 10,000 PSI hydrogen tank cars... I'm still waiting for the first one of those to catch fire but should be a real blast!

There were more than two. But it's not really about the number, it's about the severity. EV fires can burn at 5,000 degrees F and are difficult to extinguish. In addition to thermal runaway issue, battery fires release a host of toxic gases such as hydrogen cyanide and carbon monoxide. As early BEV's age and the batteries become more volatile, the long-term risks are real, and people have reasons to be concerned - especially in underground/under-building parking situations. Solid state batteries should address most of the concerns, but they're still a ways off.

My wife and I are prime candidates to replace one of our ICEs with an EV, but after seeing one of her coworkers lose a home to an EV fire, my wife says she's not ready. I have no good counterargument.

My 2016 Audi TT caught fire spontaneously even though not a BEV

I had a 1989 Jaguar XJS Convertible that was WAY head of the curve of an EV catching fire....

ICE fires happen all the time -- far more frequently than EV fires. But ICE fires are relatively easy to extinguish, and the damage potential is a fraction of that of an EV fire. ICE fires max out around 1,500 degrees, and there is no thermal runaway risk. A 5,000 burning large-capacity EV battery is a completely different animal. The most recent fire in South Korea has a lot of consumers and government officials stirred up.

About two years ago a Tesla burst into flames on a cement road near my home. It did so much damage to the road that they had to cut out like 30' long by three lanes wide to fix it (and maintain the weight capacity of the road). I would imagine that if it was a hydrgen car the neighbors would have needed explosion proof windows.

Don't underestimate the explosive power of gasoline. Gasoline in liquid form isn't too bad, but the vapors in the fuel tank can cause a huge explosion if they detonate.

Let's also remember that EV;s today use Gen 1 batteries. NetGen non-lithium batteries will be less conbustible.
