Awesome KY Drag Meet C32 vs Z28

Just got back from an awesome KY drag meet in KY. This was all done at a racetrack, no street racing. Several of my friends showed up which only made it better.

My bone stock C32 AMG ran a respectable 13.54 ET at 103.5 mph. On my second run got paired up with a late 1990's model Z/28 Camero, off the line we were even but by the time I shifted to 2nd I was a half car ahead. At the 1/8 it looked like he might be gaining but on topend, I just walked on him and was two cars ahead at the finish. I was pretty pleased with that. A friend had his neighbor's 1998 Mustang Cobra SVT DOHC 5.0 liter V8. He ran a 14.2 and later improved to a 13.8 so I was pretty stoked as I was expecting him to beat me. The owner was saying "Dang, he got smoked by a stock V6??" I never got to race the Cobra heads up but it was fun to beat his ET. He trailered the Cobra to the track, and I drove my car there and back, lol.

My buddy Stevie was there with a new (1 week old) Corvette C6 ZR1 with the 600hp supercharged engine. That was once awesome looking stock car. Carbon carbon brakes just like a F430 Ferrari. I only got to see him run once but he got a 12.02 at 124 mph and was blowing the tires away just before the 1/8 mi pole and had to peddle it to get traction with the street radials. It is a sure bet to get into the 11's on slicks.

They had a friend from Bristol (Arca driver) who came up in his E55 AMG, before I met him, he had waved at me in the C32 as we passed in the pits. I met him later with Stevie. His car was tricked out with about every mod you can imagine, including a mandrel bent custom exhaust, pulley, ECU tune, etc. He ran a 11.03 trapping somewhere in the high 120's and if I heard them right, that set the world record for modded E55's in the qtr mi by 3 /100ths of a second. (maybe note as I see two in the hi 10's on dragtimes.com)

Finally, our old buddy Willard was there in his Red Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera. Willard is an experienced racer of many disiplines and can drive his car. He has won or placed well in several Street Rod Nationals and local events, and today was no different. He turned a 10.99 ET at something around 130mph in the 911. The kicker? He is 80 years old!! Hats off to age, experience and treachery, lol If any of you saw the U-Tube video of the 80 yr old man winning the street rod race at Bristol, this it the bird that did it.

P.S. My best buddies son Trevor ran a 9.53 ET at 138mph on a Harley V-Rod "Destroyer" factory drag bike. That was a very respectable showing considering that it was his first time on the bike at the track and he only got 6 passes. Each one got faster as they got it dialed in.

Trans Am

I have alot of respect for those small block powered cars. It is easy to make big horsepower with them and we had a bunch of them turning passes in the 12's, 11's and even 10's. Course few of the really fast ones were driven to the track, they are full race cars with nitrous and lots of go fast goodies.

I ran a Ram Air Pontiac Trans Am WS6 (which I think has the same set up as the SS Camero did). That run was last year at the same track and he trapped a 13.90 but the conditions were poor, with high heat and humidity. I would expect the same car to be a few 10th's quicker today. The Z/28 that I ran was mostly stock, I think with only headers, exhaust, intake and a chip. Internals were stock. We ran really close and I did not start to pull him til past the 1/8 mi pole. I ran an earlier run against a well modded Camero and was crushed. He turned 12.25 ET at 113 mph.

Part of the event today was a Street Car Race - loose rules were heads up on street tires with full interior, and full exhaust system. That race left the "Race Cars" in the pits and let the street racers play. It was fun to watch but I did not compete, not wanting to make so many passes. A Ford GT500 Mustang was one of the fast guys. I saw a VW Jetta almost beat him, lol (both ran in the 11's).

the Z28 must have been an LT1. if your car is stock, you will not keep up with an LS1 with headers, exhaust, lid (intake), and chip. i have a c32 with pulley and intake. my roommate's LS1 Z28 camaro has just a lid and catback (not full) and we are dead even up to 120. LS1 top end is ridiculous so i am guessing you raced the LT1. A full bolt-on LT1 might keep up with an LS1 (stock).

You may be correct. I cannot say. Not being a Camero expert, I only recognised the late body style (F body?) and did not know enough to say which year it was or which engine it had. It was quick running in mid 13's and was near even with me most of the run. I did not get to speak with the owner after our run as he parked his car and walked off and could not find the guy. I looked over the car but still could not tell you if it was a LT1 or a LS1. I did see a LS1 transplanted in an older Trans Am running much quicker times but from the sound of it, it was highly modified. The range of performace from those small block powered cars goes from mild to way out there. I did learn that even alot of the WS6's were LT1's so that matchs up with what I saw last year with the WS6 running in the high 13's in hotter temps.

best way to tell if it is an LT1 or LS1 is to look at the headlights. The LT1 has sunken in boxy headlights and the LS1 has bubbly headlights that stick out. It was probably a modded LT1. nice run!

My friends 02 Pont ram air LS1 6spd has lid, headers, full exhaust, tune. From a roll way up top he pulls a car. You got to know stock LS1 runs mid to low 13s@106+.

yah i know that. that is why the car he raced was an LT1. an LS1 with a full exhaust, headers, lid, and tune will run at the very highest mid 12s at sea level

E55

I did talk to Nate, the dude with the E55 AMG. His run was a world record for E55's without NOS. All motor ran a 11:05.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uzvz7iYTrlQ

That LT1 ran a 14.07 ET - mine ran a 13.62

Here is LT1 white farside vs LS1 gray nearside. Don't prove nothin cause I still could not tell you which one it was. I remember it was black had stock looking duals that were the narrow wide rectangular shape but I don't recall what came on the LT1's stock. It was loud, lol (compared to a stoc C32)

Yup, that's exactly what my ex '98 WS6 ran with headers back exhaust and minor bolt-ons: mid 12's at 115 on street tires.

To the OP, good runs, sounds like a great time was had by all!
