Cam position sensors

So did an oil change on my 2014 ML63 and decided to check for oil on the cam position sensors. All 4 show slight traces of oil, so I will be replacing all 4. The cam adjusters all look fine. I’m assuming there are no tricks needed and changing them out is as simple as remove and replace with new. Also, does anyone make sensors that Do not leak into the wiring harness over time? Best place to source?

Thanks all

marty

The latest part number from MB seems to be leak free. Buy from a dealer or mbparts.mbusa.com

I would order new screws because the originals are aluminum from memory. One time use.

Lifted G500, GT-S, track Cooper S
easy swap, on the drivers side it helps to loosen the screw holding down the hose that blocks the inner most (V) sensor.

Did you check the cam changer solenoids? they likely have intrusion. I just did all of my sensors and found 2 of my solenoids needed swapping at 70K miles. The inner most solenoid is a bit fiddly if you don't have the right tools (and try to not remove any of the charge pipe).

Has anyone figured out how to do the cam magnets? Particularly the driver side which has the oil lines in front of one of the cam magnet bolts. Will the lines and oil filter housing need to come off to perform this job?

Link above is a great tutorial on changing out sensors and magnets as well as cleaning loom. It is for the M278 engine but the M157 will have the sensors and magnets in the same location. Part numbers I believe are also the same.

Thanks for the link but unfortunately the driver side m157 differs from the m278 as the AMG oil filter housing and lines take up a lot of space in front of the inner driver side (US) cam magnet. It’s wide open and accessible on the m278.

But I think I figured something out…..

Can you share what you ended up doing I have the same problem, I replaced all but that one because I was not able to find any details on how to correctly do it. It seems like just removing the filter and one of the lines would allow enough room for it to come out is that what you did?

Just finished the cam magnet swap, simple job. There are two bolts that are pretty tough to get to, one on the top drivers side sensor(bottom bolt, and one on the inside most sensor on the passenger side(bolt nearest charge pipe). I put some wheel bearing grease on those bolts so they would stick in the sensor instead of having to try and get them in after the sensor was installed, which would be nearly impossible. My technique worked like a charm. Took about an hour to do all 4.

what kind of etorx wrench you have. Mine won’t even fit on the inside most bottom bolt on the driver side. I have done 3 out of 4 solenoids(magnets). I’m asking a friend if he can modify/grind my wrench thinner.

Honestly, I used a 5/16 open end wrench, worked perfectly and there is not enough torque to worry about stripping anything.

Did you figure out how to replace driver side magnets? Did you remove pipes?
