Hello - a few questions please:
1) How fast is a stock 2001 E55 AMG in 0 to 60 mph?
(I thought I read 5.4 sec but have since seen 4.99 from a (Motortrend?) youtube video...and then on this board just now someone linked to another Motortrend site that said 4.8 sec)
2) I've seen several of you mention an X-Pipe...what's that? How does it help? How much are they?
Thanks guys

0-60 is generally sub 5 second. I believe MBUSA quoted it 5 even. Most magazines were able to get 4.8 or so. With slicks, I think I've seen 4.6 as possible. This is because roughly the first half of the run is traction limited, with the second half power limited.
X pipe is a cross pipe that replaces the rear resonator and/or rear catalytic converters in the exhaust system. It reduces weight (the resonator is heavy), removes restriction (cats), and provides better exhaust scavenging and area for the exhaust gas by merging the two exhaust banks. It will gain about 10 to 15 rwhp.

Sub 5 sec 0 to 60 sounds a little fast for a stock W210 E55. I know AMG lists the car at 5.7 sec. My car is stock and runs very strong - I have not done any timed runs, but my guess is in the 5.2 to 5.5 range. I would be curious what other stock E55 owners have clocked 0 to 60.

Agreed. I had to go back and look at a previous post of mine. Now again, not 100% sure on accuracy based on sensor position, but both runs pretty much gave the same result of 5.36.

4.8 sec. They say 1/4 mile is 13,3. Pocholin says 13.128 https://mbworld.org/forums/w210-amg/...es-my-e55.html
5.7 is wrong. That is what AMG lists the car to 100 km/h (62,5 mph).

I read some where that the actual hp on these cars is closer to 400 than 350.

The numbers that I have read for horsepower are 349 and torque 391. I have timed my stock E55 on several occassions and it hits 4.9 as long as I have dry pavement under the tires.

yeah, the 349 I have seen dyno'd in as the rwhp number which puts the engine at about 10% more, so 385HP.

ExploreMbusa.com had the factory 0-60 time for the 2002 as 5.4 seconds. Never seen a factory/stock W210 ever approach 350whp.

My old E55 AMG had 381bhp & 429lb/ft and would get a continuous 5.2/5.3 secs on a 0-60 (as long as it was dry!) in the wet I'd struggle to get below 6.5 secs.
I think a standard one should get to 60 in around 5.7 secs.
My car also had the x-pipe fitted. I was going to de cat it but sold it on in the end. Would love a 211 AMG in a few years when they come down a bit in price

With all due respect these answers are all over the map - from 4.8 seconds all the way up to 5.4 seconds. Geesh that's a huge difference. From 5.4 down to 4.8 is an 11.11% range! Surely someone's a bit off base.
I bought a new (used!) one the other day and will post a picture soon.
Thanks for the answers.

The ECU "softening" can be very aggressive. When I drive more than a week without a reset, my car very obviously goes down a notch and it gets worse from there. I doubt that the reviewers at that time consistently reset the ECU (if at all) which could explain the different times.
I have driven many different E55 W210s and the performance varies greatly from the ones that had just been reset to ones that may have never been reset in ten years.
Cars like the W210 E55 with strict quality control are not going to vary substantially in capability. Add the slushbox and ESP and any modestly competent driver should be able to achieve near maximum performance. 4.8 - 5.7 0-60 is a very substantial difference.
If there were anything wrong with the powertrain, trouble codes would be there. This leads me to suspect tuning as the main culprit. This would show in dyno runs as well.

Rookie Alert: What is an "ECU"? (I can somewhat surmise from the context, but have not read the owner's manual yet)
How do you "reset" the ECU?
Thank you

Wow - that's incredible re: the Sneaky ECU Reset - thanks for the link
I think I'll drive mine for a couple of weeks as-is (just purchased used 2001 stock) to set a "baseline" for myself...then I'll try the Reset and see if I notice a difference.

I've done the ECU reset from time to time and never noticed a "butt dyno" difference. Obviously when I reset it I am driving aggressive anyway, but I don't feel a difference from my normal, on occasion aggressive driving.

It's definitely there. Even your shift points are ridiculous high. Try it again but this time take her straight to the highway and kickdown/or regular hard acceleration. There have been many topics regarding how sensitive the ECU's are in our cars. For example all it takes is a few hours of total traffic time to dummy down the ECU. Sux though, to get the full potential power band this is needed. Don't get me wrong she will still run but I can definitely know/feel the difference. I personally like my shift points to be high 24/7Originally Posted by jtbeche

I do the reset once a week. I do it often and I will say that it does not always "reset" but when it does the difference is like a breath of fresh air.
I am confident that it does not always work in my case since if I do not feel the difference I try it again a short while later and then I feel it. I know it sounds a bit superstitious, but I am convinced.
I think they mean it when they say just sit there for two minutes and don't touch anything- don't turn on the radio, don't open the door. Do absolutely nothing. Seems like everything, even the dome lights, are tied to the car's systems.
FWIW, if I do not reset after a week, the car not only detunes, but sometimes acts poorly such as rev limiter cut-outs on 1-2 at WOT. Once I reset, no more cut-outs.
Another note from my notepad. After ECU reset I drive it aggressively with deep throttle for the first 5 mins or so. Seems to help set the car for the week. For example I get on the freeway and do some deep and WOT 60-80s
