E55 Daily driver?

To you veterans. If I pull the trigger on this E55 I'm looking at can it or should it be used as a daily driver. If you have read my other post you know she is driving a 2003 540 now. Is the E55 to much of a car for upper middle class, middle age couple to drive everyday? I don't want to be practical anymore but not stupid either.Thanx Ken
P.S I drive F150 daily.Industrial/commercial carpentrer I am for sure not going to drive to work.

I have driven my F-Car, Lotus Sport 350, and even a Porsche GT3 to work on a daily basis over the years. The E55 is timid by comparison and designed to be used as daily transportation and for transporting people. Heck, I can't think of a single production AMG car ever built that couldn't be used daily...even the CLK-DTM. They are reliable, comfortable and stealthy....need I say more?! I promise you that it won't melt or explode.

If you are worried about image, get over it! I drive what I want, when I want to and could care less what other people think as I buy cars for me, not for them. A perfect example would be when I drove my Mitsubishi Evo IXMR or Caterham SLR around, talk about image ruiners! I have also been known to show up at dinner parties and prime restaurants in my Chevy 2500HD tow vehicle because I am not about to let some dumb valet park one of my cars.

Buy it, drive, enjoy it!

I have an S55, and two coworkers have E55s, all used as daily drivers. I commute 20 miles each way, sometimes traffic is awful, sometimes there is none (i get up *early*). The S55 is a great daily driver except for gas mileage. An E55 would be slightly better in that regard, and easier to maneuver in traffic due to it being close to a foot shorter.

If you get an AMG, *any* AMG, get a good warranty so you can sleep at night.

I love my 55, and you will love yours if you get one.

It's the best daily driver you could have as far as I'm concerned. I've put 24,000 miles on mine in 13 months. There have probably been 3 or 4 days at the most where it wasn't driven, and that was when I was sick and went nowhere. Drive it, enjoy it. I am convinced that cars that sit in the garage all the time = mysterious problems and broken parts.

It's an awesome daily driver. Seats are great, enough power to merge appropriately. Enough options to pamper you. Steathy. Half the time no one pays any attention. Do it.

Oh - and get a warranty.

Mine has served as a daily driver, 50 mi. per day, for the past three and a half years. For the most part, only routine maintenance has been required. +1 on having a form of extended warranty in case any major component of the car fails. The E55 is a superb daily driver.

Considering it's a reliable, comfortable and fun 4 door with enough seating for 5 I'd have to say no. It's the worst daily driver out there. You'd honestly be better off with an old American muscle car. The money would be better spent to. Save yourself a lot of time, hassle, aggrevation and money and get yourself a '69 Mustang.

fwiw, I bought a new leftover 2009 E63 specifically to be my daily driver. But I started getting nervous when I was seeing that people here were babying their cars and had 5 year old E55s with only 20k on them, etc.. I started to think that these things were fragile or something

I just pretend it's a basic E Class. Until my right foot gets restless. And anyway, the majority of people on the street see them as just an everyday E Class. (I debadged mine.)

Yeah, they're somewhat expensive new, but it's still just a car. The S63 costs a lot more, but why wouldn't you want to drive that every day, too? I always thought cars were meant to be used unless they're truly collectible. After all, they're fun and comfortable. Why drive something else as a DD?

I plan on driving it all the time and put on the miles. Why not?

These cars were designed to be DDs and not garage queens. They aren't collectibles and never will be. They aren't exotics, either. A used E55 is now about the same price as a new Honda Accord.

They're just comfortable, safe, and fast DDs. They should be used as such, imho.

Not one valid point in there. This car is not meant to be a daily driver. Don't let the 4 doors, the comfortable seats, air conditioning, reliabiity, overall comfort or fun fool you. You really shouldn't drive this thing more than once a month. If you want a real DD you should get an old F-car or something. You know, something meant to be a DD. Other than the one drive a month your E55 will mostly just be a big paperweight. You shouldn't even let people look at it when you're not driving it for those 2 hours a month.

Yeah, you're right. Me bad. What was I thinking?

Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna garage it and use my 12 year old 993 as my DD instead. I'll get used to my kidneys exploding and my spine shattering on these super smooth roads here in SoCal. Plus the resale value on an E63 with low mileage should skyrocket in a few years, right?

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!! Someone who understands!!!

If one more person asks if an E55 is a good daily driver or not I'm gonna lose my ****ing mind. It is the PERFECT DD!!! 4 doors, lots o' room inside. It's not a big boat like the S class, it's not cramped like the C class. Every luxury a person needs and comfortable yet supportive seats. Mine has almost 60k miles and it hasn't broken down one me once. It's as good as a DD is gonna get, especially for the money. Get one, drive it everyday, don't even look at the miles you're putting on it, they don't matter.

Chiromikey is down in your neck of the woods. Over 100K on his DD and she still runs near 11flat in quarter on the weekends.

Even faster coming soon!

Just to highlight two key factors that have been mentioned here:

1) Get a warranty.

2) Understand and be OK with the gas milage.

These are two most important factors when deciding whether this car is a good DD for your needs.

You would be a fool not to drive it daily! And actually I think the gas mileage is 1/2way decent, 16-18mpg isn't bad compared to the 9-10 that my M5 got.

Thanx

Thanks for the input.Even the smart a$$h@!!e. Point taken.Being a Detroit boy born bred I often lusted after German cars after working on the east coast and seeing them everywhere. That said when I purchased a BMW I thought they were indistructable , I didn't expect a exploding plastic radiator or wires in trunk harness to short out after only a few years. So I'm doing my research.Don"t like my question don't read it then you won't stress out over a morons question.
But really thanks whether sarcastic or serious.I got the message.

I DD'd my E63 for 3 years. Best car I ever drove. Comfortable, reliable, decent on gas for the power. Nice sound, good radio. I miss it alot. Unfortunately its American "counterpart" is not impressing me so far.

1) lucky for you my S55 can't read. It's not a "boat", it's a ship, thankyouverymuch

2) an E55 does not have "lots o' room". see 1) above. My coworkers prefer my S55 to the E55 of my manager because mine is "not as small"

3) you finally got one right! C-class anything == too effing small. My 6 yo daughter was complaining that the C300 loaner I had just yesterday was "tiny" and she is glad I didn't buy it because it's "too small". This coming from a little 6 year old girl.

Please don't take this post as a statement against the E55. I love them, but they just do not compare to an S55 for roominess and comfort. I would have bought one except I grew up driving big detroit steel (1972 Chevelle 4-door, anyone? How about a Fury III?) so I like a big interior.
