Anyone do heatercore mod to chill water ?

just wondering if it has been done on this platform. I did it on my GTO and it worked very well. Cost about $30 in parts and took maybe 20 minutes to install. You lose your heater but its easy enough to switch back. Works very much like the Chiller Killer but you dont have to mess with your AC lines etc.

Basically you use a ubend pipe so you dont pump anymore hot water from engine into your heater core. Then you route your IC water to the heater core. To chill the water you just set your temp all the way up and turn the AC on. Voila ! Chills the water I made ten passes on my GTO (maggie) and the last four were within about 15 minutes. My trap speed never dropped at all ! time before I needed to do atleast 30-40 minute cool downs between runs to not lose MPH.

Input ?

If this is for track purposes, why not attach fans to the existing HE and a switch to run the pump and fans when the key is off and you would have no trade-offs in terms of the heater. Might work better because you can use bigger fans than the cabin blower.

Honestly, a trunk tank is probably the best solution. Drain, add some ice, and you are on your way.

The heatercore mod actually chills the water below ambient like adding ice but without having to add ice.

I ran it on my GTO for about 8 months. Doent get that cold here in Ca so no heater isnt a big deal most of the time.

so you're just blowing AC air over the heater core, effectively turning it into a little radiator to dissipate heat from that water. I can see how that would work, just like turning on the heat to cool off an overheating car

How is it going below ambient when the air that is cooling it is ambient?

You may have to do some tweaks to the servo controls to blow Ac air across the heater core after the evaporator...

because its AC air, so if your system is charged and running well, pretty cold

I would imagine it would work, just based on the fact that when I turn on my front defroster, it blows very hot air, which is also Air Conditioned, b/c its dry air, so obviously the AC is blowing across the heater core then up on the windshield, at least I assume it's happening that way

Yes I understand now, turn the AC on and run the IC cooling pump through the heater core and the AC air will cool the heater core. Makes sense, sorry for being dense.

Also interested to see who will try it first. I had an idea of doing split cooling, larger HE, wiring a pump to a switch with constant battery power and placing two small electric fans behind the HE for cool down time between passes. Atleast this way we can keep our heat.

No need to add fans, ground the stock fan, green wire next to fan, if I remember correctly, with switch, once grounded it comes on with the ignition, use the switch to turn fan off and on. When you split the cooling wire the pump to the ignition wire. At the track use a fender protector over the radiator grill opening when the hood is up and all the air being pulled by the fan will go through the heat exchanger.

Interesting idea with the heater core. I would be interested in IATs before and after the a/c is tuned on. Anyone know the capacity of the stock heater core?

I'm not sure, I'm not a Benz Ac tech. On some cars, valves kill the flow to the heater core anytime the Ac is on just to cut down on radiant heat transfer, and the airflow can only go through one or the other.

^^^^^ our cars do have a heater shutoff valve so if the heat isn't on there is no flow to the core, I'm not sure how this would work?

But wow I do like the idea

Other then at the track, if you used this in the summer you have no AC and if you used it in the winter you have no heater. Don't get me wrong if the weathers right you could use it all the time, but when you'd really want it in the dead of summer you'll be running heat into your cabin rather than AC. If you're only going to do this for the track, just run a trunk or engine bay tank with ice. The ice in a tank will definitely beat this method. All that being said it's a neat idea and certainly could be done cheap if it worked with our AC/heater core setup.

It would be neat if a simple valve could have you go from normal to this. Open hood, turn valve, rape cars.

If you want that, use a solenoid and put a switch in the cab!

There a local guy i know who did something similar to this on a different platform that he had twincharged, only he had a separate circuit for doing what you mentioned. It used the A/C condenser with a bypass if i recall and it would chill the water to where it would almost turn to ice. It seemed to work extremely well.

Interesting. Can you do it on your car, document with pics and post it here and let us know how it goes?

This is why you need to set your heat all the way to high but with AC on . If this is possible on these cars. Worked on my GTO and killed all heatsoak at the track Did better than when I was trying to pack ice in it the time before and had less boost.

you do have AC just not heat. Simply turn the temp down to cold.

Well kind of, you have AC blowing but you'd be pushing it through your heater core which has hot water in it from the IC circuit. So ya you'd have AC but it would be cooling the heater core and not you.
