Fire damaged auction AMG engine - can it be saved?
Hey guys,
I came across this car which is going to be auctioned off locally.
Should I buy this for the engine. Obviously I'm not going to pay alot but I was curious if the engine could be saved, the block and heads at least.
By the way this is a fire damage M157 BiTurbo. Obviously the plastic parts and the belts and all are gone but I wonder if the block is still ok.
What do you guys think?
EDIT: Sorry forgot picture![Big Grin](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

I thought about it but the W211 section seems to always be the center of the forum and the place with most knowledge. Or maybe I owned a W211 for so long that I'm just used to this section. I think it applies across the board though regardless of if it was an M113, M156 or M157

So a fire in the engine bay? I guess what's hotter ... internal temp of the m157 routinely operating temp, or the temp of the fire being fueled by synthetic materials like plastics and engine oil and fuel
$500 seems like a low enough risk to find out

The mechanical parts of the engine are probably ok. The problem here is, you basically need every single part that isn't metal to be replaced. The cost associated will NOT be cheap.
If you already had a 278/157 and needed a spare block/heads for machine shop work or something I could see it possible, but you'd have to buy it as a broken core engine assuming a complete teardown and inspection before you did anything. That's a LOT of damage to clean up in reality.

The last engine bay fire I saw was hot enough to leave a big puddle of aluminum on the ground so I would not be all that confident that this one is salvageable. I guess it depends on how quickly thay got the fire put out.

It would probably be as much money or more than just buying a used engine off ebay.
EDIT: A quick google revels the motors listed at 20k on ebay lol. Maybe it would be worth it.

I have an M157 car but I'm not looking to build it right now or go crazy.
I thought maybe this thing is worth having as a future/spare/potential kind of thing.
The car was completely on fire, not just the engine bay.
Here's a pic:

It might be worth a further look, a long look
. Depending upon what it sells for, it just might be worth exploring the salvageable bits.

Wow, that was a wagon too? A very rare car to go up in smokes.
