Maybach SUV Could Be Coming

Top Mercedes Exec Hints at Maybach SUV to Compete Directly With Bentley Bentayga

Sounds like Mercedes-Benz could be revving up for another hot debut.

This one could come as an exclusive new model taking direct aim at primo-luxury carmakers like Bentley. Perhaps in the form of a luxury SUV bearing the Maybach nameplate. The luxury SUV is reportedly being considered as part of an aggressive strategy focused on adding more offerings in the segment, according to a Car and Driver report.

Speculations that a potential Maybach Mercedes-Benz have been brewing since the 2017 North American International Auto Show, which kicked off in Detroit earlier this month.

At the show, head of Mercedes Research & Development, Ola Källenius, said he believes there’s still more opportunities in the luxury segment. He alluded to MB’s longtime success with SUVs, since their foray into the segment some 20 years ago. Stopping short of actually confirming that a Maybach SUV is in the works, Källenius went on to tell Car and Driver that the idea that Mercedes could build a more exclusive model than the GLS is a strong possibility.

The idea of building a Maybach SUV certainly makes sense, given the success of the $230,000 Bentley Bentayga. That’s been in hot demand since debuting in 2015. A number of other exclusive carmakers, like Lamborghini, are also planning to introduce ultra-luxury models in the segment.
