One with 4 wheels
I went to my dealer today to get a alignment and to have 4 new Pirelli winter tires that i bought from tirerack.com mounted and balanced on my stock 17"s. I get a phone call sayin that the tire somehow got caught and it got shreaded up... the dealer will send me a new one but the thing is i'm goin back to college this sunday. I have too much crap in my car to bring the other tire up. Right now 2 winter Pirelli tires are mounted in the back and the 2 fronts are the stock Eagle tires. I have stock 17" rims. My question is will my car handle weird?? Will this mess up my car??? I will have the other 2 mounted when i come home again for the winter break.
Thanx
sorry this is so long

That makes me nervous, because I'm about to buy a set of 4 new tires from tirerack.com too, and ask my dealer to mount and align on my stock 17's.

First of all, have the dealer send the new tire to the MB dealer closest to your college. Have them mount the tires.
Secondly, it's hogwash that you can't use matched sets. That rule of thumb was primarily for cars with AWD systems so that you don't mount brand new tires on one end, and used tires on the other. (That means one end has tires turning faster than the other which puts strain on the center differential.) Since you have a RWD car, you can put different tires on - but handling may be unpredictable. Especially with snow tires in the rear - on dry pavement, you may have better grip up front and that can lead to oversteer conditions. But in snow or ice, the rear will have more grip. If you're going to use just 2 snow tires, just keep them on the drive wheels (rear.)
My suggestion is to have the MB dealer mount 3 of the 4, and drive up to school. When you receive the new tire, just have the 4th mounted at the MB dealer closest to your college.
As for Tire Rack tires - I would use their recommended installers. I don't tend to use the dealer for anything but the required service. (but now that I'm out of warranty, I go to an independent MB service place.) I always use a recommended installer (Shoreline Motoring in Huntington Beach) because they specialize in mounting very expensive tires and wheels so they tend to take a bit more care.

Shoreline Motoring is an exceptional shop. Don't expect that high level of service from 90 per cent of the installers. Shoreline uses a Corghi Artiglio mounting machine, which is Italian for "no toucha da wheel witha metal." They also know which weights and bolts to use.

Got to find more common sizes for 18s. Was told 255/35 not a common size in Singapore.
First time going for 18s so not familiar with the sizes and combos.
Tks to all.

What do you want from the tires? More performance or longer lasting or something in the middle?

My next tires will be Michelin PE2's, or Goodyear GS-D3's.

Out Of Control!!
In the summer tire category, Yokohama's Advan Neova AD07 is rated #1 at Tirerack. It's OE equipment on the Elise. And it's the tire I've moved over to. I'm very impressed.
Limited sizes, though. If they've got the size, they're a worthy option. I moved from the Michelin PS2s, which I didn't like much at all.

We don't have wet roads, inteferes with our sunshine but I really like the Riken Raptors that I put on my kid's SLK that I put them on my C230. They are quiet and have the rim protector bead feature, look good, handle good and are cheap, about $400 installed OTD. Riken is a division of BF Goodrich from what I've been told.

Toyo T1-R. I drove through a monsoon that would have had the Contis hydroplaning severly without any hint of instability.
