i seen a guy on Instagram Rokenr and he said he has an exhaust software upgrade, does anyone have any info on this and if we can request our dealer to perform the upgrade?

There definitely is a exhaust software update. Had my car in the dealership recently, and it sounds quite a bit better when revving it.

First video I took a bit after I had the secondary cat delete done on my car, and before the software update.

Second video I uploaded while at work so didn't really take the time to make a description. Tts a video I took recently after my dealership visit 2 weeks ago, and you can definitely hear a difference. (Has more of the popping sound etc. Also yes I still have the secondary cat delete on it.)

Yup.

So far I haven't had any issues with the secondary cats, and it was an easy cheap mod. Didn't have the car for a day because the shop was busy, and it only costed about 200 Canadian if I remember correctly. It definitely mad a different, and was worth it. Still debating if to get the Rebellion downpipes I bought installed though, but I'm undecided on that since I might be switching to the M4 CS.

 

Your.car sounds pretty good to me. Downpipes is a big job I hear. Plus, without a tune, won't your car throw CELs?

 

Ya it is a big job. Luckily one of the AMG mechanics at my dealership has a lift at his house, and he does some things for half the rate the dealership does. Ya it would throw a CEL, and you'd have to get a tune. Luckily I know that AMG technician so he can easily get the ECU while changing the downpipes, and luckily eurocharged is coming to Edmonton so depending on how my ankles holding up I'll probably get it done when they're in town doing the dyno tunes. If not I'll just send the ecu to them to get it tuned. I might also even get electric cutouts done at the shop that did the secondary cat delete. Although I'm still undecided if to do any of that stuff or not yet.

 

Sounds like a project... But, worthwhile when done. Good luck man.

 

Actually it is NOT an exhaust software update, but an engine software update. When the C63 was introduced by Mercedes-AMG, the press cars had a lot of backfire and exhaust rumble. This "noise" was reduced later to prevent emission problems (noise emission is also regulated in many countries).

However, if one observes the AMG Private Lounge Forums, this noise reduction by Mercedes-AMG had been discussed veeeery controversial. So they decided in early 2016 to develop a new engine software that on the one side fulfills all government regulations, on the other side offers the customer an emotional exhaust note.

In November 2016 the new software was made available for the dealerships. It offers a lot more backfire in S+ and RACE, when lifting the throttle as well as a way more distinctive shift noise (up and down). BUT that is not all! It also improves engine response and comfort. My car does feel a lot more responsive in "C" when accelerating from a standstill in traffic. Also "coasting" is even better adapted. In "S+" the engine "surge" is gone completely - so this mode can be used even if driving with your grandma to church...

In S+ and race the mileage is reduced due to the additional backfire (which takes some fuel!). In comfort some users in Germany report an improved mileage.

I do not know, at which day they started using the new software for engine and gearbox. It should be (if I read that correctly):

But please keep in mind, that your cars might have a slightly different software, due to the worse fuel quality in the States compared to Éurope.

To check, if your car has the new software, one can try the following procedure:

Accelerate in "S+" to ~4,000rpm and lift the throttle. You should hear at least (!) 4 exhaust pops. Also, when slowing down in "S+" to a standstill, the 2->1 Shift should take place at 10mph (with the old software it was at around 15mph).

Nope, and I do not even know, whether this version has been replaced by Mercedes again or if it is still the current version for Germany.

 

This is consistent with what I have experienced. My car had rough idle and the CEL came on in comfort mode. Took it to the dealer and they did an engine and transmission software update in late Feb. When I got the car back comfort mode no longer had the backfire pops and crackles I used to experience downhill in 2nd gear at about 40kph. Overall comfort mode is now much smoother and the rough idle has gone.
S+ on the other hand now has a louder exhaust note than I remember. Especially the pops and bangs when you take your foot off the throttle.

Is there a way to check the software version without going back to the dealer?

 

Will be keeping a close eye on this, mine in traffic is great smooth already and quite in comfort December 2016 build so will have to find a way to check the latest update as diff service soon.

 

I tried S+ this morning... I almost always use Race or I mode, but wanted to test out what you were saying here...

First, when I smash to 4000rpm or higher in S+, then release off the gas... I get no pops. In 2nd and 3rd at least.

The car seems to down shift in S+, form 2nd to 1st, at about 12mph... but I though the downshifts were related to the rpms... not mph. Am I wrong?

Like I said, I almost always drive in Race mode and I've noticed that as soon as the car hits or dips below 2k rpm, it downshifts. A little less from 2nd to 1st... but it's pretty darn consistent.

Btw, while I didn't hear much this morning in S+ mode... Race mode, when I mash it, sounds pretty awesome. I guess it can always be better, lol, I guess I'll ask my SA and see what he says.

 

No backfire in S+ and Race = old software

 

I have the overrun backfires but probably due to my aftermarket tune; much like in my AMG GTS.

 

All kinds of backfires and pops in Race... not so much in S+... but then again I barely drive in S+.

I provided my SA with my VIN so he can check... if there's any definitive news I'll post it here, but to be honest, he didn't really sound like he knew what I was talking about.

I love my SA though... been ONLY taking my vehicles to him for years, so I'm sure he will look into it and get back to me.

Gotta take my car in for the differential service any day now. Got like 2200 miles... so would like to kill 2 birds with one stone here.

 

It's usually automatic when they hook up the car for diagnostics. The car should get flagged for an update from MB.
