R231 SL Drainage Holes / Leak / Water Ingress

I was hoping that somebody with an R231 could check something for me please...

As per the photo, do you have a piece of foam in one of your roof seals?

I'm in the process of trying to identify the source of water ingress in my 2013 R231 SL350, and came across one drainage channel thanks to the R230 thread.

Any other thoughts on where drainage holes / channels may exist or where the water may be coming from would be much appreciated!

TIA good people!

I wont be able to check my car for the foam until lunch break, but if you haven't received a reply by then I will look in my car to see if that foam is there.. Hang in there...

I checked and do have the foam. There are drain holes in the vicinity of the foam, but on the body part. You should check and make sure they are not clogged.

Sorry for the delay, I do not see any foam, but I may be looking in the wrong place I posted these pics so you could check, because I might just not be seeing the foam.

Thank you @JettaRed ! It’s reassuring that the foam is standard! I initially thought that they are blocking the drainage whole on the other side, so thought it would make sense to double check.

Do you have a picture of the hole you mention on the body part by any chance?

Cheers

Thank you @ThatsMyDawg . I think the bit you’ve pictured is a different part. The part I’m most interested in is the part of the body that is at a (roughly) 45 degree angle with the roof closed. It’s basically the part (there is one on each side) that joins with the rear windscreen.

Cheers

Ahhhh, ok. I couldn’t quite picture where the part was at based on your pic.

This is looking forward from the back of the car. I have circled the hole that would direct water along the channel for the trunk lid.

Nice one, thank you so much. I have ordered some strimmer wire and this from Amazon, which I’m hoping will help check that all drains are unclogged.

If anyone knows of other drainage hole locations, please do shout!

Thanks again good people

The Amazon tool looks interesting.

Yep! It’s for fridge freezers but I thought it could work. I shall report back afterwards…

I have an update!

Over the weekend I cleaned out the drainage holes I could see with strimmer wire, followed by a flush of water (using the above mentioned syringe and pipe kit).

I also applied Krytox for a second time in a month, to the door seals.

Finally, I removed the foam pieces as discussed previously - I did not see any use for them and it looks like they were blocking a path to drainage holes.

The leak towards the back windows seems have stopped, BUT…

I have noticed another leak - into the car, and onto the drivers seat!

The leak seems to be coming from the point at which the front window meets the top seal - specifically the part that looks open to catch water. I have attached some pics.

Any thoughts as to a fix would be much appreciated. My theory is that either 1) the window isn’t closing as tightly as it should or 2) the part that looks open to catch water isn’t sitting tightly to the window when the door is closed.

Thank you again so much!

Typically, foam is used to curb wind noise/vibrations.

There are two torx screws at the top of the A-Pillar. They can loosen sometimes. Might want to make sure they are properly tightened.
Unfortunately the WIS is pretty ambiguous about some side window specs. Adjusting windows can be involved. There’s special feeler gauge which is available from Samstag Sales https://www.ebay.com/itm/374300590424 Unfortunately WIS doesn’t specify which blade ☹️
The height adjustment of front window will be the section most helpful for #1, see attached WIS section: “Height adjustment of front window”.

Good Luck

Thank you so much for this! I’ll give the torx screws a look but I think the other bits go past my ability!

Do you or anyone have any recommendations for a garage / specialist that I could go to please? I’m based in West London but happy to travel

So I've been to a garage who think that the roof arms require "rebonding" - at a rather punchy price point.

They can't warranty water related work, so wanting a second opinion if anyone has any ideas?

Here are the roof parts:
https://www.mboemparts.com/v-2013-me...and-components

Did they tell you what parts they are referring to?
“roof arms” is somewhat vague.

For comparison, I’ll attach a picture of the area in question from my car. It’s difficult to discern potential spacing/gap details from your pictures as they were taken when wet.
