BRAKE Pad, Rotors, & Calipers Discussion Thread (OEM, aftermarket, etc...)

what's the latest and greatest? anyone have any new opinions of the ebc redstuff? they apparently changed them a little while back. just curious if anyone has tried out the new versions. most of the reviews i found were most likely from the older models. i am stuck between those and akebono. i know akebono gets good reviews- but i have been a fan of ebc starting with my dirtbike and atv racing days and continue to use them on my motorcycle. just trying to give them a fair shake. i am going to use them with the stock drilled front disks and a new set of the ebc rear disks.

Initial bite was less than stock, even when brought up to temp. They did dust considerably less though. They never felt right and I just didn't have confidence in stopping like I did with the stock pads.
Others have liked them though, and they should have been on the new formula too. Maybe it was just me and my driving style.

i know what you are talking about, about the initial bite. that's what i liked about them on my dirt bikes and street bikes. for me, it was easier to modulate the brake. it was like comparing the brake function between an old nintendo controller and new xbox- there's some middle ground rather than an all or none sort of thing
the car has less than 5k miles, so i hate to get new pads. but, i can't stand the brake dust. i drive out of the garage and it seems like the wheels are already covered

No Akebono or Porterfields for us yet. Pretty much OEM, EBC, Morse, and Carbotech are what we have available at this point.
I hear you on the dust. I have 38K on mine and tons of pad left, but am changing them out because of the dust. W/O the dusting the OEM pads would be perfect IMO.

Questions: Brake sensor and Akebono pads
My wife's 2007 Mercedes C230 Sport sedan, the onboard computer says that it needs new brakes. The odometer is around 20,000 miles. I guess that the OEM pads are too soft. I am going to replace the rotors and pads very soon.
I did the search in this forum to find more information about the brake sensor, but the threads aren't very helpful.
I am thinking about getting a set of Akebono brake pads and Zimmerman rotors (front). Will the new brake sensor fit Akebono brake pads? Is there a "hole" in one of these Akebono brake pads for the sensor?
It'll be my first time doing the brake work on a Mercedes (especially with brake sensor). I've done several times in a different make/model of cars.
thanks for your time in answering my question.

Perfect.
I forgot to ask one more question:
After I replace brake sensor, will the "low brake pad warning" on the computer go away? or do I have to reset the onboard computer?

you may want to check- but i don't think akebono has pads for the 05+ front sport calipers. they have them for the standard w203 calipers as well as the AMG's- but i don't think they have them for your calipers, per reading the brake discussion thread.

Hawk? EBC? Morse? Carbotech? what about the "hole" for the brake sensor?
thanks in advance...

Yes the warning will go away once you replace the sensor.

Frustration: Can't find good aftermarket front brake pads for my 2007 C230 Sport
I can't find GOOD aftermarket brake pads (front only) for my wife's 2007 C230 Sport (I believe that it is two-piston caliper). Many automotive parts website don't have what I'm looking for...
I am avoiding OEM and EBC brake pads. I only want either Porterfield, Hawk, etc...
Anekbono isn't available for the 2007 model year.

unless your wife is concerned with spirited driving- and just needs a good safe pad- stick with oem or Moorse ceramics (available from most parts stores). several people here have use the Moorse and liked them- much less dust than stock. most of the performance pads don't work as well as oem until them are heated up. and assuming she just drives the car like a normal person, the best option will most likely be one of the above.
although i doubt it- you might find more options in the BRAKE thread.

this is what i got when i did a search for 2007 mercedes c-class.
You might want to call the site and double check.

if your not going ceramics, oem is fine.

anti-squeal compound and lube brake parts
Did the search, but can't find good information about anti-squeal compound and lube for my wife's 2007 Mercedes C230 Sport brake parts.
This weekend or next weekend, I am going to replace front pads and rotors with new parts. What type of anti-squeal compound and lube do you recommend?
Spray-on or paste? to apply anti-squeal compound on the back of new brake pads?
Lube the pins with anti-seizure lube? Will it withstand high-temp?
Someone in this forum suggested that I should use 600 grit emery cloth sandpaper on the rotor surface (to create swirls), so the new brake pads can "catch", to prevent from squealing. What do you think of that? I am getting a new pair of Zimmerman cross-drilled brake rotors (front only), do I need to create some light swirls on the rotor surface?
Your thoughts and suggestions will help me in preparing to replace the brake pads and rotors...thanks
In case if you are looking for Cermaic brake pads for your 2007 Mercedes, I'd suggest Morse CMX-1121 (front only). That is the only part I can find (other than EBC...must be ceramic brake pads). The OEM brake pads really sucks and overpriced. I just ordered Ceramic brake pads through PartsAmerica.com for only $49.99 (front only).
