New 16" AMG GT-S owner... Blown radiator
Finally got a proper car after having a Hellcat (fatcat). Did have an M4 before though, but what a difference!
Beautiful 2016 AMG GT-S, white on white, carbon package inside/outside, Burmester hi-end + DPP. I am in love with the car, it does have only 13000 miles, clean history. Truly amazing machine.
Unfortunately after some VERY high speed driving I did puncture the front radiator with a rock and suffered the common problem. One of the coolant tanks emptied out, basically the one which provides coolant circulation for the intake radiators. The car does have extended warranty but unfortunately it is still in the process of transfer from previous owner. And also as far I understood, those sort of damage is rarely covered by warranty, especially the CPO one.
So is there a chance someone can share any ideas how to prevent this from happening again and share the instructions on radiator removal from the car? Since most likely I will be changing it myself, cause I usually work on my cars by my own.
Thanks!

that sucks, sorry you're dealing with that. I have mesh on the left/ride inlets to try to protect the intercoolers, but I don't have any behind the grill to protect the radiator, you may be able to do something like the side mesh.
There is a guide on this thread that can usually post shop diagrams from MB... https://mbworld.org/forums/coupe-roa...intenance.html
I saw something (when doing a search on here) about a TSB about radiator screens but couldn't figure out if that applied to the GTS model or only GTC.

I can give you the MB parts numbers, they P/N are different for the later models, but they do exist for the 2016 model. I found them in the MB part system I have a copy of.

Could you post part numbers? Ty.

You should install the new mesh covers that started shipping as standard on the 2018 or 2019MY GTs. You can try to get it done under warranty because all cars now have the mesh... but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
DIY-Ing this would be tough, at least not without the shop manual.
It did appear, that the expansion tank did not drain completely -> once the vehicle cooled down, I was able to see coolant just on the bottom of the tank. I was really happy about it and thought that the leak then is very minor, so, I added 200ml of coolant and took it for a evening spin.
I was little hard on the car since I did miss it so much. I didn't notice that the transmission temperature started to rise above 190 Fahrenheit, which was previously a normal operating temperature of it. After 15 minutes of hard driving a Transmission Cooling Malfunction appeared.. However the warning disappeared immediately, and I slowly drove home in Comfort. The temperature when the error popped up was 215F. Car operated normally. No lights or messages on the dash. Transmission went down to 195F.
I immediately started digging the forums about such error.
I know that C63 had different gearbox, but the cooling system is basically the same.
here is what I found. in short, WHEN YOU DAMAGE YOUR FRONT RADIATOR, TRANSMISSION WILL START OVERHEAT.
https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-c63s-...nsmission.html
Also, I started to worry that pumps could gone bad too..
On day after this I took it to my friends shop and we scanned the car for errors.
They are very experienced guys who work with flooded premium cars.
Surprisingly, the car did have all the corresponding errors stored:
charged air temperature
transmission temperature
water pump low pressure
they did tell me that the chance that the pumps are bad is very low, and they constantly face this issue on all German cars even after they just remove coolant from the car during repair. They told me that a small hit usually fix them (literally, since they are electromagnetic). And it is also not about the amount of coolant in the system but about the pressure in it.
So, most likely I will be performing the job on my own at their shop this week. They should have all the manuals and experienced tech to help. Hope everything will be ok.
